Apple has joined with two automakers to offer introductory trials to its subscription music service. The partnerships could also help take a bite out of Spotify’s subscription base at the same time.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said Tuesday it will start a year-long promotion on May 1st that includes a six-month subscription to Apple Music for new users with every new Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep or Ram model equipped with Apple CarPlay. For those who already subscribe to Apple Music, the promotion will instead cover three months of their subscription.
At the same time, Apple partnered with Volkswagen in Europe to offer similar trials beginning in May in that brand’s new vehicles equipped with CarPlay, the automaker said.
As of early last month, Apple reported 36 million users (30 million in the US, alone), compared to Spotify’s 70 million. Given its trajectory to eclipse Spotify’s base, Apple is apparently looking at attracting new customers from different sources.
